NEW BEGINNERS' CLASS: An outdoor practice (weather permitting), early enough to beat the heat! No previous experience is necessary. We'll be working on our beginners' curriculum from Sword in Two Hands, and the main Schola site, and also work on integrating the developing work on abrazzare (grappling) and daga (dagger/knife) skills. These skills are drawn from direct translation from historical sources, developed through multiple physical interpretation and tested at speed. Though we emphasize historical technique, our training sessions are a blend of warmup, interpretation, drill, and both focused and open sparring. We practice L'Arte D'Armizare (The Art of Bearing Arms), a historical European martial art. Our main sources of interpretation are the books (c.1410-1420) of Fiore dei Liberi, a fencing master from Friuli (hence the non-standard Italian spellings!).

The brainchild of world-renowned composer/saxophonist Larry Monroe and vocalist Donna McElroy, longtime fixtures of the Berklee College faculty, this series explores the interplay of two great art forms, Jazz and the American Song Book. Each concert will feature the work of a single composer. The Fall dates are George Gershwin (Saturday, September 11), Irving Berlin (Saturday October 2), and Cole Porter (Saturday, November 20). According to Mr. Monroe, “This series is dedicated to a fresh Jazz-oriented approach to the American Songbook composers. We will share new insights, original arrangements, anecdotes and a little Tin Pan Alley history about the music and lyrics of both the popular hits and the undiscovered treasures from the Golden Age of American songwriting.”
Performed by a sextet of some of the area’s finest jazz musicians (bios below) including Donna McElroy; vocals, Larry Monroe; saxophone, Russell Hoffmann; piano, John Repucci; bass, John Ramsay, drums, and Jeff Stout; trumpet.
GEORGE GERSHWIN
Among all of America’s iconic songwriters, George Gershwin first and most aptly combined the art of the song with that of jazz to shape it as a 20th century expression. Although there are two decades of music to experience, this evening will take a closer listen at some of his classics that have been adapted and redefined through jazz expression including “Embraceable You”, “But Not For Me”, “I Got Rhythm” and “Oh, Lady Be Good”.

How does it apply to WMA? - A set of exercises including the abdominals, lower back, obliques, hip flexors/extensors, and buttocks. - How often, intense, etc. can/should these be done? - Q&A (Any other exercise topics people would like me to cover in the future?) Principles of half-swording and grappling This class will present a series of two-person drills using half-sword and grappling techniques which are intended to cultivate a centered body mechanic and sensitivity to your opponent's mind, body and weapon(s). The techniques presented will focus on applying these general principles to sparring engagements in armour, though unarmored applications will also be discussed. Participants with any level of half-sword experience from any martial tradition are welcome. Participants will need some form of hand protection (padded gloves or gauntlets) a mask or helmet and a rigid training sword (waster or rigid blunt). Floppy weapons will yield poor results for this class. Participants who wish to don any additional armour are welcome and encouraged to do so. Constructing Tactical Drills All fencing actions can be classified by their purpose and when they occur in the sequence of actions. Using this data, we can construct logical options drills that enhance our ability to internalize the historical system. This class will show you how to build from simple technique exercises to tactical options drills. Proto-Tourney Here's where participants get to simultaneously practice swordplay while contributing to the development of practical competitive WMA! This is an ongoing effort to test and vet various tourney rules to see what works well and what needs improvement. Details on specific rules will be provided at the event, though questions are welcome at [masked]. Equipment Required: Protective gear: head protection (e.g. fencing mask), hand protection (e.g. LAX gloves), groin protection for men Recommended: Protective gear: arm/forearm/elbow protection, knee protection, mouth guard (if you wish to grapple) Weapons: modified shinai, steel federschwert, nylon swords, and anything else you'd like to play with -- please send questions/requests to [masked] Directions The venue for the event is the Boston Fencing Club at 110 Clematis Avenue, Waltham, MA 02453.â?? Finest Kind is the remarkable folk trio from Ottawa, Canada whose exquisite harmony singing and brilliant vocal arrangements are bringing a fresh sense of excitement and discovery to the performance of old songs. The trio's glorious sound, served up with easy-going humor, has won a devoted following across North America. Thrills and Chills...Finest Kind's vocal arrangements are a creative tour de force. Tradition-based yet curiously modern, the trio's harmonies are an enchanting feast of opulent chords and ever changing textures. The trio's amazing vocal blend has been called "molecular bonding" by one reviewer: "Any closer," he says, "and they wouldn't be allowed to do it in public." Audiences invariably mention "goosebumps."

Irving Berlin has been called, “the best all around, over all song writer America has ever had.” He was certainly the most prolific having composed and published nearly 1000 songs, either for Tin Pan Alley or Broadway or for Hollywood. This makes it nearly impossible to play or to listen to jazz and not encounter Berlin’s music. This evening will track Berlin’s career from his earliest Tin Pan Alley hit, “Alexander’s Ragtime Band”, to Broadway classics, “How Deep Is The Ocean” and “Blue Skies” to lesser known film lovelies, ”Change Partners” and “It Only Happens When I Dance With You”.
When: Oct 2, 2010 7 PM Where: Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown, Massachusetts Cost: $20 - $15 students and seniors (Sat, 02 Oct 2010 19 )

I found the course was on the mark with the required prerequisites. A number of organizations are offering courses both locally and on line. On-line courses provide no field mentoring or exam provisions and I could not locate any local course that provided both written and field exams. Since June, Cleanedison was able to provide additional field mentoring and testing for my BPI Envelope and Heating Professional certification. Cleanedison is providing a much needed service with the ability to both train and certify home performance professionals. - J. Romansky- Boston, MA

A TALE OF TWO ISRAELS: Alan Dershowitz and Martin Fletcher Alan Dershowitz joins former NBC Middle East correspondent Martin Fletcher for a conversation about the “two Israels”--the Israel of strife and violence that captures the headlines and the dynamic and diverse Israel that is often obscured by those headlines; the world of Jerusalem and the world of Tel Aviv; the mountains and the sea, the religious and the secular, the ancient and the entrepreneurial. Alan Dershowitz is a celebrated lawyer and political commentator; he is a professor at Harvard Law School and the author of more than two dozen books, including The Case for Israel and a new novel The Trials of Zion. Martin Fletcher served for more than 25 years as Middle East correspondent and Tel Aviv Bureau Chief. He is the author of Breaking News and the new book Walking Israel: Personal Search for the Soul of a Nation.
Their conversation will be moderated by Jonathan Wilson, Director of the Tufts Center for Humanities and the author of the novel A Palestine Affair.

I have been to many seminars and training courses, and in my 25+ years in HVAC, I have never come across a teacher as well diverse and interesting as CleanEdison's instructor. Jim Kweskin and Geoff Muldaur are back at it, playing gigs and bringing knowing smiles to the faces of their fans. As founding members in the 1960s of the nationally popular, Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Jim Kweskin & the Jug Band, they helped to create a new style in American musical culture. Jerry Garcia's first band (Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions, a forerunner to The Grateful Dead), was formed after Jerry and Bob Weir heard the Kweskin Band's first album. They not only went for its music but also its look . . . no more matching striped T-shirts and rehearsed jokes for these guys. It was finally okay to wear street clothes and be natural on stage. John Sebastian, after playing in the Even Dozen Jug Band in New York, formed the legendary Lovin' Spoonful to carry on the carefree spirit of his Cambridge heroes. It was the Kweskin Band's jug player, Fritz Richmond, who gave the Lovin' Spoonful their name. Fritz also brought his hipster persona to the folk and folk-rock scenes for all to emulate - his granny glasses becoming the look for The Birds, John Lennon and many others.
Although Jim Kweskin & the Jug Band appeared to have a laid back, spontaneous approach, the group was not an easy one to copy. Their music seemed simple, but it was often complex. The other jug bands of the day dropped out one by one. Aside from Fritz Richmond's nonpareil jug and washtub bass playing, two of the most distinctive qualities of the band were Jim Kweskin's clean, rhythmic finger picking and Geoff Muldaur's emotional, quavering voice. To this day, no one plays guitar like Jim Kweskin and no one sings like Geoff Muldaur. They are singular artists.

Daryl Lowery and Instant!Groove - "specialize in the funky soul-jazz grooves commonly referred to as “acid-jazz”…The rhythm section is elastic, mid-tempo patterns aid excellent solos…, resulting in a sound akin to guitarist John Scofield’s “A Go Go” CD, on which he was backed by organ trio Medeski, Martin and Wood.” Jazziz Magazine. Daryl Lowery’s playing, noticeably rooted in the music of John Coltrane and the “post-Coltrane influenced” school, is perfectly complimented by the highly original sound of Instant!Groove's exciting new lineup featuring charter member Rick Peckham (guitar), Louis Cato (drums), and Ben Zecker (B3). Sometimes makes you want to move. Always it's Funky. For more information, go online to http://www.instantgroove.com/.

Cole Porter is one of few composers in the history of song so singularly responsible for their work with both music and lyric so masterly crafted. For jazz musicians, however, his music is equally attractive for his intriguing melodic sense and his willingness to extend conventional song forms. This evening we will examine an array of Porter’s songs, both vocal and instrumental versions of favorites like, “Night And Day”, You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To” and “All Of You” plus, we’ll unearth some rare jewels. And as Porter might say “Anything Goes” as we hope to entertain “The East, West, North and South Of You.”

Jean Redpath is recognized as the foremost interpreter and champion of traditional Scottish music. Making her home near Edinburgh, Ms. Redpath is known today as one of the few exponents of Scottish music, and the recognized world authority. She is equally well known to millions of Americans as a radio personality through her appearances on Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion, and Robert J. Lurtsema's Morning Pro Musica.
Her songs and ballads come from the oral tradition of Scotland and reflect the stoic lovable qualities of the Scottish character. She has devoted a large portion of her professional life to the songs of Scotland's national bard, Robert Burns. Her work with the late Serge Hovey, who researched and arranged over 300 of Burns' songs has produced seven recordings which have won critical acclaim. Four more recordings made in Scotland are sung mostly a capella.
