We practice L'Arte D'Armizare (The Art of Bearing Arms), a historical European martial art. Our main sources of interpretation are the books (c.1410-1420) of Fiore dei Liberi, a fencing master from Friuli (thus the non-standard Italian spellings!). Our beginning students work on a combination of the longsword curriculum in Sword in Two Hands and the main Schola site, and also work on integrating the developing work on abrazzare (grappling) and daga (dagger/knife) skills. These skills are drawn from direct translation from historical sources, developed through multiple physical interpretations and tested at speed. Though we emphasize historical technique, our training sessions are a blend of warmup, interpretation, drill, and for those who've passed our safety standards, both focused and open sparring. No previous experience is necessary--we can start you at any regular meeting if you let us know you're coming! Beginning classes generally run from 7:15 to 9:00, though many of us end up staying later.

Welcome to the Shabbat table! We will experience physical and spiritual delights of orthodox Shabbat, learn or reinstate our connection to the rituals, light candles, learn blessings and their meanings, and enjoy the Glow of divine Presence that descends on Shabbat. All women will light candles if so desire, and you will be helped with the words of blessings and with rituals. We are learning best when experiencing, and there is no better way to experience the very essence of Kabbalah through the ancient ritual of Kiddush: blessings on bread and wine. Every simple ritual of Shabbat has deep kabbalistic source and significance. While enjoying delicious Shabbat meals, we will talk about Rosh Hashana, the meaning of the 'inscription into a Book of Life' and the Ten Days in between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur in kabbalistic perspective . This Shabbat is Shabbat Shuvah, 'Shabbat of Return'. According to greatest Kabbalist Rabbi Isaac Luria (Ari'zal) Shabbat Shuvah is the archetypal Shabbat -- the juncture in time at which we are empowered to influence every Shabbat of a new year. We will start to learn meditative practice of blessing as a main way of receiving Ruach HaKodesh, Divine Inspiration: amazing deep meditative practice of Kabbalah that is capable of transforming one's life on all levels. Place: my home Time: Friday, September 10, 6:15 PM What to bring: We will have enough food, so you don't have to bring anything. If you choose to bring your favorite food or wine, please make sure it's kosher: has a sign U or circled K on it. We use only kosher food and drinks in the house. If you're late past candlelight time, we will be entirely happy to welcome you, but we won't be able to use your contribution. How to dress: Any way you feel is appropriate to honor the Presence. Parking: You can park anywhere on the street. Monetary contributions: Suggested offering is $20. Part of your offering will go to charity. Please contribute online with paypal or bring with you. *No material contribution is required to come to a Shabbat dinner. Please note: we do not handle business matters on Shabbat, so all logistics has to happen before candlelight time. RSVP: Please try to be on time. We gather at 6:15 PM, light candles at 6:45 PM and proceed with Shabbat rituals. If anyone is willing to come earlier to help set the table, you're more than welcome. Looking forward to our Shabbat together!

The brainchild of world-renowned composer/saxophonist Larry Monroe and vocalist Donna McElroy, longtime fixtures of the Berklee College faculty, this series explores the interplay of two great art forms, Jazz and the American Song Book. Each concert will feature the work of a single composer. The Fall dates are George Gershwin (Saturday, September 11), Irving Berlin (Saturday October 2), and Cole Porter (Saturday, November 20). According to Mr. Monroe, “This series is dedicated to a fresh Jazz-oriented approach to the American Songbook composers. We will share new insights, original arrangements, anecdotes and a little Tin Pan Alley history about the music and lyrics of both the popular hits and the undiscovered treasures from the Golden Age of American songwriting.”
Performed by a sextet of some of the area’s finest jazz musicians (bios below) including Donna McElroy; vocals, Larry Monroe; saxophone, Russell Hoffmann; piano, John Repucci; bass, John Ramsay, drums, and Jeff Stout; trumpet.
GEORGE GERSHWIN
Among all of America’s iconic songwriters, George Gershwin first and most aptly combined the art of the song with that of jazz to shape it as a 20th century expression. Although there are two decades of music to experience, this evening will take a closer listen at some of his classics that have been adapted and redefined through jazz expression including “Embraceable You”, “But Not For Me”, “I Got Rhythm” and “Oh, Lady Be Good”.

Kabbalah at the Shabbat Table: Festival of Sukkot We will experience the festival of Sukkot -- the ultimate manifestation of our trust to Divine for sustenance, providence and protection. We eat all our meals at the Sukkah, a strange hut-like temporary construction of walls without the roof, under the open sky. In fact, for seven days we make this temporary dwelling our home. We refrain from eating or drinking anything outside of the Sukkah, even a glass of water. We will learn about, and experience Four Kinds -- lulav, etrog, hadass and aravah and learn the kabbalistic meaning of the ancient ritual, which evokes the spiritual powers of 'four directions' and quality of the Divine attributes within ourselves. We perform the Four Kinds ritual and meditations and receive divine blessing of its power. We will talk about Water Drawing Celebration -- the most joyful celebration that took place when the Temple stood in Jerusalem; in all-night celebrations, water was poured on the Altar, processions, dancing, singing and playing musical instruments continued for 6 nights till daybreaks, 'drawing water with joy'. It's been said that 'one who did not see the joy of the water-drawing celebrations, has not seen joy in his life.' We will talk about and re-enact, meditatively relive these ancient rituals. We will also continue to learn meditative practice of blessing as a main way of receiving Ruach HaKodesh, Divine Inspiration: amazing deep meditative practice, whcih is capable of transforming one's life on all levels. Place: my home Time: Friday, September 24, 6:00 PM What to bring: This day is Yom Tov of Sukkot, so no contributions could be carried or used. How to dress: Any way you feel is appropriate to honor the Presence. Also considering weather: we will have our meals outdoor, dwelling in Sukkah. Monetary contributions: Suggested offering is $20. Part of your offering will go to charity. Please contribute online with paypal should you chose to do so. *No material contribution is required. RSVP: Please try to be on time. We gather at 6:00 PM, light candles at 6:22 PM and proceed with Shabbat rituals. Looking forward to our Sukkot Shabbat together!

See below for Schedule and Event descriptions, as well as details on Equipment guidelines and Directions to the event. Please come join us in this growing New England WMA event! Best Regards, Jeff Tsay Director and Host Forte Swordplay ======= Schedule 9a-11a Special Guest workshops (details below), presented by: Fiore longsword by Colin Richards, Director of Arts of Mars in Hannover, Germany; host of the World Wide Open Championship Winding by Scott Brown, Director of Sword to Sword in Houston, TX; host of the Open International Gathering 11a-12p Lunch break 12-1p Core Training for Improved Performance by Marc Bernier 1-2p Free play 2-3p Principles of half-swording and grappling by Erik Schmitt 3-4p Free play 4-5p Constructing Tactical Drills by Ken Mondschein 5-6p Proto-tourney 6p+ Post-event dinner Event descriptions Free play These are open periods where the floor is open for participants to cross blades with anyone they can convice! Rules as agreed upon with free play partners. All participants are expected to hold safety and control as the highest priorities. Fiore longsword An overview of Fiore's longsword in two hands, geared toward an audience experienced in swordplay but not necessarily in the Italian tradition. The focus will be on practical application and integrating these techniques with your own existing swordplay experience. Winding A series of skill development drills for winding and absetzen in the Germanic traditions. This is not a "sticky sword" exercise. Core Training for Improved Performance We will start with a brief introduction, followed by the addressing the issues below: - Core training: what is it? Why do it? How does it apply to WMA? - A set of exercises including the abdominals, lower back, obliques, hip flexors/extensors, and buttocks. - How often, intense, etc. can/should these be done? - Q&A (Any other exercise topics people would like me to cover in the future?) Principles of half-swording and grappling This class will present a series of two-person drills using half-sword and grappling techniques which are intended to cultivate a centered body mechanic and sensitivity to your opponent's mind, body and weapon(s). The techniques presented will focus on applying these general principles to sparring engagements in armour, though unarmored applications will also be discussed. Participants with any level of half-sword experience from any martial tradition are welcome. Participants will need some form of hand protection (padded gloves or gauntlets) a mask or helmet and a rigid training sword (waster or rigid blunt). Floppy weapons will yield poor results for this class. Participants who wish to don any additional armour are welcome and encouraged to do so. Constructing Tactical Drills All fencing actions can be classified by their purpose and when they occur in the sequence of actions. Using this data, we can construct logical options drills that enhance our ability to internalize the historical system. This class will show you how to build from simple technique exercises to tactical options drills. Proto-Tourney Here's where participants get to simultaneously practice swordplay while contributing to the development of practical competitive WMA! This is an ongoing effort to test and vet various tourney rules to see what works well and what needs improvement. Scottish and Irish music and song has been rapturously received around the world. Hailing from Scotland, Ireland, Cape Breton and Vancouver, its five members are united by a love of traditional music and a commitment to creating new music on its foundation. Using fiddle, accordion, harp, guitar, flute, step-dance and vocals these five virtuosos blend boundless energy with unmistakable joie de vivre. Each player within The Outside Track is a master of their chosen instrument with the band stacking up an impressive amount of international awards. This amount of talent alone would be enough to recommend the band but in this case the end result is so much greater than the sum of the parts. Kimerly Fraser who is popular in the Boston Area will replace one of the members of the band for this show.

The trio's glorious sound, served up with easy-going humor, has won a devoted following across North America. Thrills and Chills...Finest Kind's vocal arrangements are a creative tour de force. Tradition-based yet curiously modern, the trio's harmonies are an enchanting feast of opulent chords and ever changing textures. The trio's amazing vocal blend has been called "molecular bonding" by one reviewer: "Any closer," he says, "and they wouldn't be allowed to do it in public." The brainchild of world-renowned composer/saxophonist Larry Monroe and vocalist Donna McElroy, longtime fixtures of the Berklee College faculty, this series explores the interplay of two great art forms, Jazz and the American Song Book.
Irving Berlin has been called, “the best all around, over all song writer America has ever had.” He was certainly the most prolific having composed and published nearly 1000 songs, either for Tin Pan Alley or Broadway or for Hollywood. This makes it nearly impossible to play or to listen to jazz and not encounter Berlin’s music. This evening will track Berlin’s career from his earliest Tin Pan Alley hit, “Alexander’s Ragtime Band”, to Broadway classics, “How Deep Is The Ocean” and “Blue Skies” to lesser known film lovelies, ”Change Partners” and “It Only Happens When I Dance With You”.
When: Oct 2, 2010 7 PM Where: Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown, Massachusetts Cost: $20 - $15 students and seniors (Sat, 02 Oct 2010 19 )

I found the course was on the mark with the required prerequisites. A number of organizations are offering courses both locally and on line. On-line courses provide no field mentoring or exam provisions and I could not locate any local course that provided both written and field exams. Since June, Cleanedison was able to provide additional field mentoring and testing for my BPI Envelope and Heating Professional certification. A TALE OF TWO ISRAELS: Alan Dershowitz and Martin Fletcher Alan Dershowitz joins former NBC Middle East correspondent Martin Fletcher for a conversation about the “two Israels”--the Israel of strife and violence that captures the headlines and the dynamic and diverse Israel that is often obscured by those headlines; the world of Jerusalem and the world of Tel Aviv; the mountains and the sea, the religious and the secular, the ancient and the entrepreneurial. Alan Dershowitz is a celebrated lawyer and political commentator; he is a professor at Harvard Law School and the author of more than two dozen books, including The Case for Israel and a new novel The Trials of Zion. Martin Fletcher served for more than 25 years as Middle East correspondent and Tel Aviv Bureau Chief. He is the author of Breaking News and the new book Walking Israel: Personal Search for the Soul of a Nation.
Their conversation will be moderated by Jonathan Wilson, Director of the Tufts Center for Humanities and the author of the novel A Palestine Affair.

The group garnered considerable attention after its first performance (Sanctuary Composers Forum) and word spread that this world class ensemble was truly one of a kind and quickly adapted and personalized the compositions that were written expressly for it. The NWJCO has released two recordings on the Big and Phat Jazz Productions label. No Place to Hide was released in the fall of 2007. Transitions is the most recent release (June 2010) and is currently garnering attention on the JazzTimes and All About Jazz websites.
